Stand before Yilan Sanqing Temple and the whole shimmering sweep of Meihua Lake opens up before you — a rare Taoist temple in Yilan where you can offer prayers and gaze out over the water at the same time. Though the temple takes its name from its principal deities, the Three Pure Ones (Sanqing Daozu), what truly keeps the worshippers coming is Ji Gong, the 'Living Buddha,' renowned for answering prayers. Set against the mountain and beside the lake, Sanqing Temple sits in quiet, lovely surroundings — a well-known spot in Yilan for both faith and sightseeing, and just right for anyone who wants to pray to Ji Gong and unwind with a gentle wander.
History
In the 1970s, a group of worshippers chose a spot on the shore of Meihua Lake to build a temple. Legend has it that when the site was being selected, Ji Gong himself pointed to this 'dragon-vein treasure land' of superb feng shui. Sanqing Temple commands a view of the lake's waters ringed by mountains, and as word of Ji Gong's efficacy spread from mouth to mouth, worshippers came from far away. Beside the main hall to the Three Pure Ones stands a separate hall to Ji Gong. In time a full tourism belt grew up around the temple, and the Meihua Lake cycling path became a favorite Yilan destination — making Sanqing one of the few temples that balances worship and leisure so well.
