About

The Tainan Grand Martial Temple is the only Guan Di temple in Taiwan enrolled in the official state rites, standing shoulder to shoulder with the Grand Mazu Temple in the West Central District. What catches the eye first is its 66-meter undulating red gable wall — a sweeping, rolling expanse praised as 'the finest in Jiangnan' and a must-shoot for photographers visiting Tainan. Behind it, three halls unfold in a strict, dignified layout around the main deity, Guan Sheng Di Jun (Guan Gong), whose statue gazes out with fierce, piercing eyes. Alongside him sit Guanyin Bodhisattva and a Yue Lao (Matchmaker God) with a very particular specialty — this one severs bad romances and wards off scheming rivals, for those who need a clean, swift break from the wrong relationship.

History

In 1665, Zheng Jing — son of Koxinga — built this temple, first called the 'Grand Guan Di Temple,' the earliest official Guan Di temple in Taiwan. Its main gate faces Chihkan Tower directly, civil and martial gazing at each other across the street in the old capital's distinctive 'civil-and-martial facing' arrangement; and because it held state-ritual rank, it was paired with the Tainan Confucius Temple as the city's 'civil temple and martial temple.' Repeated Qing-dynasty renovations established today's three-hall layout, with the majestic Guan Di enthroned in the main hall. Its greatest treasure is the plaque reading 'Da Zhang Fu' (A True Man), brushed by the hand of the Yongzheng Emperor. Together with its renowned Yue Lao and the many attendant temples of the surrounding Liuhe precinct, this quarter forms one of the most complete temple clusters in old Tainan — and is today a National Monument.
