About

Step into Dharma Drum Mountain and you'll find it looks less like the incense-wreathed temple you might imagine and more like a serene mountain academy. This monastery set among the lush green hills of New Taipei's Jinshan District is one of Taiwan's four major Buddhist organizations, founded by Master Sheng Yen in 1989. Its architecture deliberately blends modern lines with the spirit of Zen, echoing everywhere the Master's ideal of 'protecting the spiritual environment.' The main hall enshrines Shakyamuni Buddha, and the campus also holds a meditation center and a Buddhist college. For anyone wishing to set the clamor aside for a while and learn to still the mind, Dharma Drum Mountain is the most representative place of Taiwanese Buddhism's modernization.

History

In 1989, Master Sheng Yen founded Dharma Drum Mountain in Jinshan, though the grand opening ceremony was not held until 2005. He put forward the ideal of 'uplifting the character of humanity and building a pure land on earth,' holding that Buddhism should not merely chant sutras deep in the mountains but step into society, care for the world, and purify the human heart. And so Dharma Drum Mountain is not only a Buddhist monastery but a comprehensive campus combining education, culture, and charity — a path that has earned it an important place in the international Buddhist community as well.
