Taipei Wenchang Exam-Luck Escape

When a big exam is closing in and the nerves start to bite, this is the trip Taipei people make. Start the morning at the Taipei Confucius Temple, asking Confucius — the Great Sage and First Teacher — for a grounded, steady mind for study; then take the MRT to the Taipei Wenchang Temple near Shuanglian to pray to Wenchang Dijun, the god of examinations and literary success, for exam luck and a place on the pass list. One stop for the roots of learning, one stop for the luck to pass — two stops in half a day, enough to settle your own heart, or the heart of a student at home.

🚇 By MRT and on foot; an EasyCard is easiest. The two stops are about a 5-minute MRT ride apart.

🙏 Pray for: A foundation in study, an upright approach to learning, and a calm, focused mind

The Taipei Confucius Temple is the most important Confucian temple in northern Taiwan. Its Dacheng Hall holds no idols — Confucius, the Great Sage and First Teacher, is honored by a spirit tablet alone, solemn and plain. What you come here to pray for is not last-minute exam luck but a grounded attitude toward study and a settled mind: quiet the heart first, and the reading goes in. That is exactly why this route puts it first.

💡 The Confucius Temple burns no incense — a bow with palms pressed together is all that is needed. The grounds are peaceful, well suited to a slow solo loop to clear your head. The grandest day is the Confucius ceremony (the Shidian rite) on Teachers' Day, September 28, each year; on ordinary days it is far quieter.

🚇 MRT Yuanshan Station, Exit 2 — about a 10-minute walk ⏱ Suggested stay: 50 min

🙏 Pray for: Exam luck, a place on the pass list, and Wenchang's blessing

The Taipei Wenchang Temple stands right by Shuanglian MRT Station and is the busiest Wenchang temple in central Taipei, dedicated to Wenchang Dijun, the god who governs scholarly honors. Come exam season, its walls fill with photocopied exam admission tickets, layer upon layer packed edge to edge — the hopes of countless students, each pinned here for a place on the pass list. Having prayed for the roots of learning, at this stop you hand the luck of passing to Wenchang Dijun.

💡 Tradition calls for 'homophone offerings': scallion (cong, for cleverness), celery (qin, for diligence), radish or caitou (for good fortune), and zongzi rice dumplings (bao-zhong, a 'guaranteed pass'). You can bring a photocopy of the exam admission ticket for Wenchang Dijun to 'register.' Report the student's name, ticket number, and exam subjects sincerely.

🚇 From Yuanshan Station, take the MRT to Shuanglian Station (2 stops), then about a 5-minute walk ⏱ Suggested stay: 45 min

Hour-by-Hour Plan

  1. 09:30 Taipei Confucius Temple (the Great Sage — praying for a foundation in study and a calm mind)
  2. 10:20 MRT from Yuanshan Station to Shuanglian Station (about 5 minutes)
  3. 10:35 Taipei Wenchang Temple (Wenchang Dijun — praying for exam luck and a place on the pass list)
  4. 11:20 Lunch and a slow wander around Shuanglian and Chifeng Street

What to Eat Nearby

  • 🍜 Shuanglian & Chifeng Street — Old-Taipei Flavors

The Shuanglian and Chifeng Street area around the Wenchang Temple is where old Taipei and the new creative crowd overlap. There's the traditional street food of Shuanglian Morning Market and the old noodle shops and cafés tucked down Chifeng Street's lanes — after praying for exam luck, find a small shop here, have a bowl of noodles or a cup of tea, and let some of the tension ease off.

  • 🍜 Dalongdong — Temple-Gate & Old-Street Eats

Dalongdong, beside the Confucius Temple, is one of old Taipei's original settlements, right next to Bao'an Temple and Hami Street. The temple-gate snacks and traditional noodle dishes around here are local flavors from shops decades old — after praying at the Confucius Temple in the morning, stop for a late breakfast on the old street before moving on to the next stop.

📝 Both stops are free to enter. Praying for exam luck isn't praying for a lucky break — this route deliberately places the Confucius Temple's 'foundation for study' ahead of the Wenchang Temple's 'exam-luck blessing,' a reminder to yourself (or the student at home) that a settled heart and diligent reading are what give a god's blessing something to work on. For quiet, pick a weekday morning and avoid the crush in the week before major exams, as well as the 1st and 15th of the lunar month. Afterward, the Shuanglian and Chifeng Street area is full of old shops and cafés — a good place to sit down alone and catch your breath.
