When people in Taoyuan say they're 'going to the big temple to pray,' they mean Jingfu Temple — this municipal historic site in Taoyuan District is the most important center of faith in the whole city center. Dedicated to Kaizhang Shengwang, it also brings together the beliefs of both the Zhangzhou and Quanzhou immigrants of this region, a single temple inscribed with the history of ethnic integration. Limited by the tight urban land, Jingfu Temple developed a distinctive 'hip-and-gable with false four-slope' roof, tiers rising one upon another for an especially magnificent silhouette. It sits right on the traffic roundabout at the heart of Taoyuan, a spiritual landmark the city's people need only look up to see.
History
During the Jiaqing reign (around the 1810s), immigrants from Zhangzhou, Fujian, pooled their funds to build a 'Jingfu Shrine' to Kaizhang Shengwang — the forerunner of today's Jingfu Temple. As Taoyuan gradually developed, the temple expanded along with it, becoming the most important center of faith in the city center. It was renovated many times through the Daoguang and Tongzhi reigns, underwent a large-scale renovation under Japanese rule, was formally renamed 'Jingfu Temple' after the war, and completed its most recent major renovation in 2002, its appearance renewed. From Qing-era pioneer settlement to today's special municipality, Taoyuan has changed and changed again, yet this largest Earth God temple in Taoyuan has always stood at the city center, a spiritual stronghold shared by generations of Taoyuan people.
