About
One of Taiwan's most famous night markets grew up around a single temple — this is the wonder of Keelung Dianji Temple. Standing in Keelung's Ren'ai District, it is one of the 'three great temples of Keelung,' dedicated to Kaizhang Shengwang, and the entire 'Keelung Miaokou (Temple-Gate) Night Market' fans outward from it, creating the singular scene of 'a night market within the temple, a night market ringing the temple.' It is at once a center of faith and a food destination famous across Taiwan, its incense and its crowds never fading year-round. Don't only mind the food — look up at the carved beams and painted rafters, especially that pair of masterfully carved stone dragon pillars.
History
In 1875, the first year of the Guangxu reign, Lin Wei-yuan of the Lin family of Banqiao donated the land and helped build Dianji Temple, dedicated to Kaizhang Shengwang, making it the most important center of Zhangzhou faith in the Keelung area. From the First Sino-Japanese War through the Japanese colonial period, Dianji Temple underwent many major renovations, its fate bound tightly to Keelung's own — from Qing-era trading port to later international harbor, it witnessed all the rise and change of Keelung Harbor. The temple still preserves many precious Qing-dynasty plaques and stone stelae recording the pioneering stories of Keelung's early settlers. And the temple-gate night market around it, running unbroken from the Japanese era to today, has long become Keelung's most iconic tourist landmark.
