Before you even reach Hsinchu Putian Temple, you'll first catch sight of the towering statue of Guansheng Dijun (Lord Guan) rising 120 meters high — grand and imposing, visible from far off, the temple's most famous landmark. This temple in Hsinchu's East District is dedicated to Guansheng Dijun, and being near the Hsinchu Science Park, it is a center of faith for many of the park's tech workers. Beyond Lord Guan, Putian Temple's Matchmaker (Yue Lao) is also well known, drawing many single men and women to pray for a good match — seeking a little guidance for their love lives in this efficiency-driven tech city.
History
Hsinchu Putian Temple was founded during the Daoguang reign of the Qing dynasty (around the 1840s), built with funds raised by Hakka devotees of the Hsinchu area, at first only a small temple. It was renovated and expanded many times thereafter, gradually growing to its present scale. Under Japanese rule the temple was once requisitioned, and was restored by local devotees only after the war. Its architecture is plain yet solemn, and it still preserves some Qing-dynasty stone-carved components. Over the years the temple has continued to run community services and lectures, keeping close ties with the surrounding neighborhood — an important place in the Hsinchu area that serves both religious faith and community cohesion.
