History

Beigang Wude Palace is dedicated to the Heavenly Official Martial God of Wealth Zhao Gongming — the 'Central Road' Wealth God who commands the Five Road Wealth Gods of the east, west, south, north, and center. Beigang has been the most important commercial town in the Yunlin-Chiayi region since the Qing dynasty, and business people revered the Martial God of Wealth with special devotion, so that Wude Palace's incense burned ever brighter with this fervent wish for prosperity. After many expansions and renovations, and especially after a large-scale reconstruction in the Republican era, Wude Palace became widely known as the 'founding ancestral temple of the Five Road Wealth God' and one of the most famous God of Wealth temples in Taiwan. In its main hall Zhao Gongming is enshrined as the Central Road Martial God of Wealth, flanked by the four Wealth Gods of the east, west, south, and north. Each year at the Martial God of Wealth's birthday on the 15th of the 3rd lunar month, worshippers from across Taiwan pour in, and the temple's tradition of distributing 'fortune money' draws great crowds of wealth-seekers. Beigang Wude Palace was also among the first temples in Taiwan to introduce 'online lamp-lighting' and 'app fortune-drawing,' bringing this ancient Wealth God faith into the digital age.
